These are a few before and after photos of a roof that had all the snow removed. This house had a few ice dams. Home owners usually remove the first 6 inches or so of snow off the roof thinking this will help prevent ice dams. But this is not true. What this does is warm the roof melting snow above it which runs down the roof and freezes potentially creating another ice dam. Also, an ice dam could from higher on the roof. The best thing to do is to remove all the snow from the roof. This roof recently had all the snow removed. Note the rake is on wheels riding on top of the shingles leaving less than a 1/4 inch of snow that will easily be melted by the sun and drying the roof. Also having the rake on wheels protects your shingles. Call us if you have any questions. We would love to help.
